The much anticipated reopening of The Alps is nearby and the excitement is palpable. It’s been far too long since we’ve stared in awe at a majestic Alpine landscape, drink in hand. Clipping into our skis for the first time in what will be two years for most people, will be an emotional moment. Whether we express this through tears or beaming smiles, it’s going to be very special indeed.
The crisp cold air of the snowy mountains, the first tracks after the first snowfall, the first fireside drink to discuss the day on the slopes, the first delicious meal in a stunning chalet or the best nights’ sleep since your last ski trip – get dreaming and make it real.
This week in London saw major press launches, resort presentations, travel industry gatherings and general bonhomie amongst the extensive ski community. With good reason, the mood is very positive indeed. Travel restrictions are being lifted on a weekly basis and the resorts are now guaranteed to open. Hearing such positivity first hand from senior diplomats at a London embassy is about as reassuring as it gets. In a world that has seen so much uncertainty in recent times, this new sense of clarity and determination has seen bookings accelerate to pre-pandemic levels. Not least because it takes a juggernaut of effort from thousands of people, millions of euros of investment and thousands of tonnes of machinery to prepare the resorts for opening. It’s not an exaggeration to say that we are past the point of no return. Bring on the Winter.
